1. Please describe briefly how the Japan Foundation Fellowship experience influenced your career.

Answer: The Fellowship allowed me to conduct research for my dissertation at the Institute for East Asian Culture at Tokyo University. On return to the U.S., I completed my dissertation and then obtained a faculty position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a dual appointment in the Department of Religious Studies and the Center for Asian Studies in 1976.

2. The Japan Foundation is planning to create a network or forum among past Japan Foundation fellows. Please let us know if you have any suggestions in terms of themes, format, etc.
