Questions:
1. Are you enaged in Japanese Studies?

Answer: A. Yes, I am engaged in Japanese Studies at a university or research institution.

Field of Study: Theatre & Dance

2. Please describe what you are currently doing. (If you have your own website or any relevant site, provide its URL.)

Answer: I have just finished an article on Nihonbuyo and ethnicity for a forthcoming book of essays. I also have just put together an anthology of kabuki fusion plays, with introductions and notes. I am currently teaching a course on Asian Theatre and Dance. Recently I "published" a DVD (at Insight Media) called Kabuki for the West. Also recently published is a translation of Hanayagi Chiyo's NIHONBUYO NO KIHON made by Takao Tomono and myself.

3. Where did you acquire your most advanced Japanese language training for your research?

Answer: A. I learned it at a university. (Claremont Graduate School, Claremont School of Theology)

4. Have you ever participated in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme?

Answer: NO

Optional Inquiry:
1. Please describe briefly how the Japan Foundation Fellowship experience influenced your career.

Answer: It deepened my understanding of Nihonbuyo, and actually resulted in a manuscript which was accepted by the U. of California Press (who had published three preceeding books), but was then rejected when a new editor took over and was required to publishe donly books that would be of material profit. I subsequently published several segments of the ms. and have made presentations that derived benefit from the research that led to the ms.

2. The Japan Foundation is planning to create a network or forum among past Japan Foundation fellows. Please let us know if you have any suggestions in terms of themes, format, etc.

Answer: Fellows should be identitied and cross-referenced by their areas of spcialization, including both major and minor areas.
