Answer: B. I learned it at a special language training school. (The Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies)

Optional Inquiry:
1. Please describe briefly how the Japan Foundation Fellowship experience influenced your career.

Answer: I have two long-term fellowships received. The 1985 grant resulted in my first non-dissertation book. The 2005 grant resulted in my most recent book (2009). Both grants provided me with extremely valuable living time in Tokyo and Osaka-Kobe, respectively, and ooportunitiees to travel in Japan.

2. The Japan Foundation is planning to create a network or forum among past Japan Foundation fellows. Please let us know if you have any suggestions in terms of themes, format, etc.

Answer: For American scholars, contacts with non-Americans outside Japan working in related fields of research would be very useful.
