Overview

Each year, The Japan Foundation, New York, dispatches U.S. based Japanese culture specialists to Central and South Americas, to promote cultural exchange throughout Latin American countries. The specialists to be dispatched include Japanese and non-Japanese cultural figures, researchers, and artists in a broad range of fields.

Mitsudomoe (Three Swirls): Mind, Body, and Spirit – Kenny Endo and Miles Endo / El Salvador and Belize


Renowned taiko performers Kenny Endo and Miles Endo will be touring El Salvador and Belize for a series of concerts and workshops.

Hogaku concert with Koto, Shamisen and Shakuhachi / Brazil (Brasilia and Recife)


Koto and Shamisen player Masayo Ishigure, Mitsuki Dazai and Shakuhachi player Marco Lienhard will be touring Brasilia and Recife for a series of performances.

Classical music with Japanese artists / Cuba


Mr. Keisuke Wakao is assistant principal oboe of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and principal oboe of the Boston Pops Orchestra. He will be performing selections from Bach, Marcello, Williams, and R. Strauss with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, as well as visiting a music school for a workshop.

“An Evening of Japanese Jazz”/ Jamaica


Flutist YUKARI and pianist Ms. Eri Yamamoto will visit Jamaica to give a concert and workshop to local audiences and music students.  They will be performing their own compositions as well as well-known Japanese songs in a jazz style.  They will also be joined by local musicians for a collaborative performance.

Piano concert tour “East Meets West: A World Journey on the Keyboard”/ Cuba, El Salvador and Mexico

 

Pianist Ms. Junko Ueno Garrett will visit the three countries to give concert-lectures to local audiences and music students. She will be comparing and contrasting Japanese music with Western music in style, expression and melody through a survey of Japanese music history.

Lecture Tour "Telling Our Story: Coalition Building and the Asian American Journalists Association"/ Brazil


Ms. Lori Lei Matsukawa, the KING5 co-anchor and President of the Board of the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington, will be giving lectures in four cities in Brazil: Sao Paulo, Belem, Tome-Acu, and Brasilia. In Brasilia, her lecture will be part of the 8th International Congress of Japanese Studies in Brazil.
