Performance: Contemporary and Traditional Music of Japan and Beyond / Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados

Fue (Japanese flute) and taiko drum performer Kaoru Watanabe and taiko performer / composer Isaku Kageyama will travel to Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados for performance and workshop.  They will perform traditional as well as contemporary pieces and collaborate with local musicians.
This program is co-organized with the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad & Tobago.

A new performance created in collaboration between Pig Iron Theatre Company and Toshiki Okada will premiere in the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival. ZERO COST HOUSE is a sly, elusive work of autobiography, a play about moving out of Tokyo and re-reading Henry David Thoreau's Walden.

This performance is supported by The Japan Foundation through its Performing Arts JAPAN program.

Art Theater Guild and Japanese Underground Cinema, 1960-1986 / New York, NY

The most comprehensive retrospective of films from Art Theater Guild, the Japanese independent film company, will start from December 6, 2012 to February 10, 2013 in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. The exhibition features Nobuhiko Obayashi, Susumu Hani, Shohei Imamura, Nagisa Oshima, Kaneto Sihndo and Koji Wakamatsu. Non-ATG programs of Japanese underground will be presented. This series is co-organized with The Museum of Modern Art.

Exhibition: Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant-Garde at The Museum of Modern Art / New York, NY

The Japan Foundation is proud of co-organize with MoMA an exhibition that provides a focused look at the extraordinary concentration and network of creative individuals and practices in this dynamic city of Tokyo from the mid-1950's through 60's, with the work of around 60 artists. Featuring over 200 works of various media, the exhibition will offer a story of artistic crossings, collaborations, and, at times, conflicts, with the city as an incubator. It will introduce the myriad avant-garde experimentations that emerged as artists drew on the energy of this rapidly growing and changing metropolis.

Exhibition: Silver Wind: The Arts of Sakai Hōitsu / New York, NY

Japan Society Gallery presents the first American retrospective of Sakai Hōitsu, master of the bravura gesture, a samurai aristocrat turned Buddhist monk who dedicated his life to art and poetry. Triumphs of compositional daring and sumptuousness, Hōitsu’s paintings and those of his chief pupil Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858) made a defining Japanese contribution to world art.  This exhibition is supported by The Japan Foundation through its Exhibition Abroad Support program.
