The Japan Foundation New York Office (JFNY) accepts applications from nonprofit organizations for the JFNY Grant throughout the year. This grant aims to support projects that will further understanding of Japanese arts and culture. Successful candidates may be granted up to $2,000, or up to $5,000 for projects conducted in the 14 Southern*1 and 12 Midwestern*2 states. Priority will be given to those projects that have secured additional funding from sources other than the Japan Foundation.

*1 South:
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia

*2 Midwest:
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin

Grants will be made to non-profit U.S.-based organizations.
Applications will be accepted only for projects that take place within the 37 states east of the Rocky Mountains. For projects to be held in the other thirteen states, please contact the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles.
The purpose of the applicant's project must be to nurture further understanding of Japanese arts and culture, or to produce U.S.-Japan collaborative projects, through performing arts, exhibitions, film screening, lecture, and/or symposia.


Applicants who have already received funding from other Japan Foundation grants for the same project cannot apply.
Organizations which have already received the JFNY Grant in the last fiscal year (from April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2006) cannot apply.
Japanese-language education programs are excluded. Please contact the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles for Japanese-language education programs.
Martial arts, medical, technical, or scientific projects are excluded.
Political activities, religious activities, social welfare activities, and commercial activities are not considered.


Publicity
Printing cost of program, leaflets, catalog
Honoraria for artists, lecturers
Travel expenses for artists and lecturers, including per diem and accommodation expenses
Shipping cost of films, exhibits and/or other materials related to the proposed event

The grant will be paid in the form of reimbursement for the preceding expenses. The award money will be remitted upon receipt of the final report and receipts or other proofs of expenses paid.

Please note that applicant should cover theater or space rental fees, and/or the cost of a reception, if applicable.

In addition to the above-mentioned criteria, projects related to the arts will be judged according to the following:

Artistic quality of project
Expected impact on the audience and the U.S. arts scene

Information regarding the participants, including biographies
Audiovisual materials (videotapes, audiocassettes, CDs, etc.) of artists' work, if applicable.


Applications must be received by JFNY at least 3 months prior to the beginning date of the project. JFNY will contact applicants regarding the result 2 months prior to the project starting date.
