CGP 2021 Relief Grant for Japan America Societies and Japanese Gardens

Like many other U.S.- Japan related non-profit organizations, Japan America Societies and Japanese Gardens have been struggling to maintain organizational stability and regular programming as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The objective of this program is to provide support to an organizational sustainability project or salary assistance that will lead to long-term operational stability.

Abe Fellows Global Forum

An initiative of the Abe Fellowship Program, the Abe Fellows Global Forum (Abe Global) is designed to bring Abe Fellow research and expertise on pressing issues of global concern to broader audiences. Abe Global will host several events each year in partnership with academic and civic organizations throughout the United States. This initiative is co-organized with the Social Science Research Council (SSRC).

Grassroots Exchange Discretionary Grants

The Grassroots Exchange Discretionary Grant program aims to support nonprofit organizations to create and develop networks between the US and Japan focused on common social issues. Examples of relevant social issues include but are not limited to: aging society, disaster prevention and recovery, and social entrepreneurship.

CGP Relief Grant for U.S.- Japan Grassroots Exchange under COVID-19 Challenges

U.S.-Japan-related nonprofit organizations have been struggling to maintain regular programming and outreach as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, small and mid-sized organizations that operate on a grassroots level are facing financial difficulties and uncertain futures.

The purpose of this grant program is to provide short-term assistance with operational costs as well as support for the development of new forms of programming that will help sustain the organization in the long-term especially for small and mid-sized organizations (less than 10 full-time staff) and organizations with immediate needs (e.g. shortage of cash reserves).

CGP Grant Program: Grassroots Program

The CGP Grassroots Program seeks to build from existing US-Japan foundations through supporting innovative projects that will nurture the next generation of leaders by supporting nonprofit organizations. Supported projects aim to promote networking, capacity building and innovative program development for US-Japan exchange.

Grassroots Exchange Network Japan (GEN-J) Program

GEN-J Program dispatched Grassroots Exchange Facilitators and Japanese-Language Supporters to the U.S. who provided grassroots exchange activities for two years, aiming to strengthen the relationship between Japanese companies operating in the U.S. and the local communities in the U.S. as well as to promote a better understanding of Japan through their grassroots activities. JF jointly administered GEN-J with The Laurasian Institution.

Japan America Society (JAS) Initiative

In order to encourage sustained growth and innovation of Japan America Societies (JAS) in the United States, the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) launched the JAS Initiative in 2008 to support networking and capacity building of Japan America Societies. Recognizing the value of the Japan America Societies in fostering mutual understanding between the U.S. and Japan on a grassroots level, CGP aims to support the Japan America Societies through its continued work with the JAS Initiative. In order to further strengthen Japan America Societies in the NAJAS network and to enhance their effectiveness in carrying out their mission, the JAS Initiative will support strategic planning and/or capacity building projects that demonstrate feasibility and organizational sustainability.

Japan Travel Program for US Future Leaders

This program brought US graduate students of international affairs to Japan for a study tour. Participants acquired firsthand knowledge of Japan through the program. This program was a collaboration between CGP and the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs. This program was conducted from 2009 to 2014.

JET Memorial Project

The “JET Memorial Project,” commemorates the two American JET participants, Ms. Taylor Anderson and Mr. Montgomery Dickson, who lost their lives during the Great East Japan Earthquake (March, 2011). CGP will support various activities at their respective alma maters for five years, with the intent of enhancing the younger generation’s understanding of Japan.

J-Initiative: J-Support, Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery

Immediately following the devastation of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, there has been a tremendous demonstration of support and aid to Japan on an international level, especially in the United States. In the US, almost $250 million in disaster aid for Japan was raised in the first month after the earthquake.

Thus in response to these recent events and as part of our mission to promote the US-Japan global partnership through dialogue and interchange between various organizations and sectors in Japan and the US, the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) is announcing a special category of the J-Initiative: J-Support. The J-Support category is intended to support projects which contribute to the Japanese disaster recovery and reconstruction efforts, thus strengthening mutual understanding between the US and Japan.

RFP: Exploration of Critical Issues Emanating from Japan’s March 11th Disasters

This program supported US-Japan collaboration on solutions to issues faced by Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Applications were accepted in 2011; after 2011, proposals for projects with this theme were accepted in “CGP Grant Program: Intellectual Exchange”.

Japan-America Collegiate Exchange Travel Program

This program supported short-term US undergraduate study abroad in Japan. Instructors of a Japan-related course were invited to apply for funding to bring course students to Japan. This program was managed by CGP in 2011 and by Japan Foundation’s Japanese Studies Program from 2012-2013.
